HISTORY

NINETEENTH CENTURY NASHVILLE CHARM AND STORIES

A once brick-paved neighborhood, Henrie House was built in 1879 by Henry Zellner as a wedding present for Martha “Henrie” Zellner upon her marriage to Horace Greely Lipscomb, a prominent hardware merchant. The cross-streets where Henrie House sits are named for two signers of the Declaration of Independence, who came to Nashville from Charleston, South Carolina.

In the late 1800’s J.C. Martin and his wife Claudia, a lively socialite, moved in and kept the home bustling through the turn of the century. Ed Buchanan, a prominent newspaper man, and his wife Jeanette then occupied the home until around 1940. Maude Noble (“Mammie”) then moved in with her daughter and grandchildren while her husband and son-in-law were deployed in WWII. The children found playful refuge in their home by hiding behind the tiny door under the stairs, sliding down the stairwell, and enjoying cold treats delivered by horse-drawn ice cream wagons. Mammie ran the home as a boarding house and would rent out rooms to railroad workers who always carried with them a great story.

It was during this time that Henrie House earned its place in historical Nashville infamy as a home for roaring parties, social entertainment, and wedding receptions for socialites and dignitaries—all accompanied by live music, fresh flowers, chilled cocktails, and merry times. And to this day, if you listen hard, you can still hear the champagne bottles popping, the laughter from evening soirees, and the famous Nashville quartets strumming their guitars and delighting a crowd applause echoing through these halls. Henrie House has been and continues to be, a boutique, Nashville gathering place for enjoyment and celebration.
